Filmapalooza - day 3

Saturday morning actually started with Josh's previously mentioned bathroom flooding (in his defense, there was something wrong with the toilet...and him. They both had their problems.)

We met with Mark Rupert and Liz Langston (48 HR Film Project & Filmapalooza Producers) for breakfast at a little French bakery. Then I went to an Alexander Payne workshop and Josh went to the Shooting and Lighting on the Fly workshop. The Payne workshop only had about 30 people in it so it was a lot more intimate and we got to ask him a lot of questions.

The Boston Beer Company provided lunch (sandwiches) and after that I went to a workshop with a Samuel Adams designer where we drank beerr, watched commercials and provided feedback.

Next, they screened the National Film Challenge finalists. One of the guys we made friends with, Jack from Weary Films, had a good film in this group.

Finally, the night ended with the awards show at a place called Sauce. We received our trophy (is it a plaque?) for winning Best of Chicago and then there was an afterparty at a place called Raw. Our Weary Films friends won Best Silent Film in the National Film Challenge. A group from Portland won the overall Best Film of 2006 award and we talked to them for a while after too - their film was one of my favorites so it was good to see them win.

And that's pretty much it. - posted by Kendall

Filmapalooza - Day 2

The day started bright and early with free coffee and little boxes of cereal. I went to a panel on what to do with your film after you make it and then saw the HD Showdown films at the KiMo Theatre which was built in 1927 and features lots of New Mexican artwork and cow skulls. Then Josh and I caught a quick lunch (pizza) before our film showcase. We screened Bloody Mary, Cheese Knives and Mustache of Lies to a modest but appreciative crowd.

After our films it was back to the KiMo to see all the city winners' films, including our own from Chicago, All Two of Us. Then we had what was supposed to be a quick dinner at a diner called Lindy's before the main event, Alexander Payne's (dir. of Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt and Sideways) Keynote.

That's about it for Friday. We've been meeting some really cool film-makers and the producers of Filmapalooza have been really great too.

Tomorrow (today) is the awards show...

Filmapalooza - Day 1

Josh and I arrived in Albuquerque without any problems... except that Josh tried to get a woman to steal a Delta blanket. Our cab driver to the hotel told us all about how Steven Segal was a jerk and we almost saw Jessica Alba (apparently she, Parker Posey and Christian Slater are staying at our hotel and filming something across the street).

We had some time to kill so we rode the bus to Old Town, ate some New Mexican food, visited the sculpture gardens at the Art Museum and went to the Atomic Museum.

The festival itself started at 6pm and they screened our film, Let's Spin the Night Together. It went well. After that there was a karaoke party at the District Bar and Grill. - posted by Kendall

Here's a quick recap of current events... Josh and I went to the Chicago Sketchfest and filmed a bunch of stuff which we are currently editing. Josh made a video called Fast Love that's been seen over 600,000 times on YouTube. We have films screening at Filmapalooza and SXSW in the coming days. We're on our way to Albuquerque for Filmapalooza tomorrow morning - busy!

A Pizza Infinity Christmas Special

Happy Holidays from Pizza Infinity!

11.14.06

Bloody Mary
will be screened at the 20th Century Theatre in Oakley this Sunday, November 19th at 4pm. It will be shown with other regional films created as part of the National Film Challenge followed by Brown Mackie College student films. $1 admission.

11.10.06

The last few weeks have been prolific for Pizza Infinity - we completed two short films. The first film, Bloody Mary, was created as part of the National Film Challenge, a timed filmmaking competition where filmmaking teams have just one weekend to make a short film. We received our genre and other required elements on the evening of Friday, October 20 and had to turn in the finished film the following Monday.

Our genre was "Holiday Film" and we went with Halloween. We filmed at alchemize all day on Saturday. Woo was our DP and he brought a small, efficient crew.

Two weeks later we participated in the 48 Hour Film Project's Fall Shootout. This was only open to the city winners of this year's competition. We won "Best of Chicago" with our film All Two of Us (watch it on YouTube), a collaboration with Chicago-based sketch comedy troupe, OneTwoThree.

This time our genre was "Musical or Western". We went with musical which meant I had to spend a whole lotta extra time writing and recording songs during the weekend. I recorded demos for the cast to sing to during filming and then we recorded their vocals the next day after the film was edited.

We can't put this one online quite yet but you can get a sneak peak of some of the music by listening to the new episode of the Crankcast (Episode 57). Liz from OneTwoThree is a guest. - posted by Kendall

Pizza Infinity has finished a music video for legendary California band, White Flag.

Who is White Flag? Over the years, several musicians have joined and left White Flag. Pat Fear and Doug Graves founded the band in 1982. The band's recordings or live performances have at one time featured both Ken Stringfellow (who appears under the name Kim Crimson) and Jon Auer of the Posies, Kim Shattuck and Ronnie Barnett of the Muffs, Jeff McDonald and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross, Greg Hetson from Bad Religion, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Eric Erlandson from Hole, Javier Escovedo of legendary Los Angeles punk band The Zeros, and Rancid's Tim Armstrong to name only a few.

So we had them film themselves performing the song in California and then send us the footage...

or you can watch it on YouTube

more about the members of White Flag...

Pat Fear has worked as a songwriter and producer for such artists as Courtney Love's band Hole, NOFX, Pat Smear (of Nirvana/Foo Fighters and The Germs fame), The Go-Go's, Bangles, Redd Kross, Sean Lennon, Ace Frehley of KISS, and Swedish garage punk legends The Nomads. He is also a technical advisor on the currently in production film "What We Do is Secret," (starring two long time White Flag fans: "E.R." actor Shane West, and Bijou Phillips), as well as being vegetarian, and a member of PeTA.

Kim Crimson,(under his real name of Ken Stringfellow) is a sought after producer, when not busy fronting his full time band The Posies, and is one forth of the revamped lineup of the legendary band Big Star, and tours as keyboardist for R.E.M.

Doug Graves is a professional surfer on the band supported Team Clecoin Snow and Surf team, and a member of the internationally known 70's disco tribute band "The Boogie Knights", who were single handedly responsible for starting the campy disco revival fad in The United States. The Boogie Knights are an established club act, with a large "following," r or rock and roll and punk fans who enjoy the band's irreverent approach to the once hated dance music, as well as much sought after entertainers for private events, They have performed for parties such varied public figures as Tom Cruise, Mick Jagger, and former US President Gerald Ford.

El Swe is a member of the popular Swedish band Sator, and is a well respected producer in Scandinavia, having worked on releases by The Hellacopters, The Hives, The Nomads, and former ABBA member Bjorn's solo albums.

Victor M. Surrounded was the drummer in the final version of Goth punk pioneers Christian Death that featured the late front man Roz Williams, and produces music for the "Teletubbies" children's television series. He also played in the band Test Pattern, which featured founding White Flag members Pat Fear, Pick Z. Stix and Jello B. Afro. In 1980, when he was 14 years old.

"Oh great, this guy is a real artist."

That was my first thought on meeting Kendall for the first time two years ago today on the set of my talk show. From there, John (my co-host) and I fretted about whether this guy is going to freak out on us or not. I did not do a typical talk show and this was the most untypical episode yet. At this point we had only had one artist on the program and it was the worst guest yet. Boring and he wouldn't shut up. That was a "normal" episode too. This show though was the most messed up episode I ever did. I loved having subplots and the subplot of this one was we were selling out to Fox and we replaced our co-co-host Peapers (a plastic skunk) with a human (played by Scott Spaulding) and we added a laugh track (and lots more stuff). Anyway, it was nuts. Here are some choice clips from the show focussing on the interview.

So the show went great in my opinion but I really really thought Kendall hated me. After the show I tried to avoid him a bit. I figured he'd be angry. He acted like he really liked it but I just could not believe it. I mean, did you see those clips? I really didn't think it'd matter if he was lying or not as I'd probably never run into him again anyway. HA!

The show was supposed to be shown in Cincinanti. Our contact there bailed on us and we were having trouble getting it shown. After the show, Kendall kept e-mailing me about the Cincinnati show time which I basically ignored (I e-mailed back once) because Bob (producer) hadn't gotten back to me about it. So when I saw Kendall on the set of the short film I was supposed to be in I was not ecstatic. I was like "oh great, the guy who has been bugging me." I went over and talked to him to explain the situation again and realized, "hey he's actually pretty cool." Not once had he been a jerk although he could have been.

Now I wanted to show clips from the actual short film we worked on but the film's script supervisor wouldn't let me. I'm not even allowed to say the name of this short film. Instead, let's pretend this was a birthday party with cameras. Here is a montage of behind the scenes photos. First, you can see the chairs where we got the idea for Love Me, Don't Sit on Me. If not for fake mobsters being shot by paint ball guns there might have never been a bloody chair and then there might never have been my concern of, "That poor chair" and then there might never have been Pizza Infinity. Seriously. Not even Peter Parker has a better origin story than that.

Then here are two short video clips from Kendall's camera.

You can see my great acting as a bodyguard.

From this meeting we slowly began to write Love Me, Don't Sit on Me together. We met once a week on Saturday at the Starbucks inside Barnes and Noble on Newport on the Levee. I imagine it was because we are slow to trust people and wanted to feel each other out. Soon, I think we will tell each other our real names and where we live but I don't want to rush anything. So that's the beginning!

Two years later and how are we doing? - posted by Josh

O
ur short film, Utter Chaos, is being released on DVD in October. Utter Chaos is an adaptation of a short story from the Students of the Unusual, a horror anthology comic book. We won the "Best Comic to Film Adaptation" award at their film showcase which took place at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC in June. They're releasing a special issue that includes a bunch of short adaptations on DVD. They've created a trailer to promote the release.

Here's our behind the scenes look at Making Utter Chaos.

It's time for the Chicago 48 Hour Film Project recap... For some reason Josh and I decided it'd be fun to do the 48 Hour project two weekends in a row so we teamed up with Chicago sketch comedy troupe OneTwoThree and formed a superfilmakingroup. Friday morning, Josh and I loaded up his car with our equipment... it was a tight fit. The drive took a little longer than usual due to the Skyway being down to one lane but we made it to Sam and Liz's apartment (our homebase) about an hour before the kickoff event was set to begin. We met Rob there and he directed us to Subterranean, where all 16 teams waited for our... assignments? We initally drew "action/adventure" as our genre but decided to go for the wild card, coming up with "buddy movie". The required prop was a soccer ball.

When we got back to Sam and Liz's place, we started writing. OneTwoThree is comprised of Kelly, Rob and Liz. We were also joined by world famous standup comedian, Bryan Applegate (just ask his dad). Sam (Liz's husband) went to go hunt down a soccer ball. Josh and I write together and we've never involved a bunch of other people in the process but it turned out to be real nice and collaborative-like, a true team effort.

We got a few props together and I drew a three-legged race flyer.

Here's where it gets crazy... we were done with writing and prep for the morning so early... that I slept for FIVE hours on Friday night. The only downside was that right before I went to sleep with the knowledge that I had forgot my power cable for my G5 Tower back home in Cincinnati. It turns out that this particular cable is unique to my specific model of computer and finding one, even in a bustling city like Chicago, on short notice is not an easy task... but I'd deal with it after sleeping.

We got up at 6am and headed out to the park. Liz and Kelly had called around the night before and secured us some extras and small part actors - everyone was GREAT, especially considering they showed at 7am on a Saturday with barely any notice. I did see Mary throwing up behind a tree at one point but she performed like a champ, notwithstanding.

Everyone but me got really excited when two dogs that were tied together ran by...

This was a no-crew shoot with Josh and I taking turns with the camera and the boom but everyone pitched in - especially Bryan. Our bloody soccer-player didn't seem to faze the cops who came by or the little league baseball team that was warming up nearby.

Liz seemed a little too willing to roll in the dirt...

...and Bryan seemed a little too willing to tend to James' naked flesh.

Next, we were off to the Golden Budha Chinese Restaurant and Sam went to Devil's Due to borrow the power cable I needed. I found out later that Liz had previously worked at the Golden Budha which explained why they didn't think it was weird that we were doing the things we were doing.

It was a really nice location with ornate decoration and a giant waterfall. We were there while the restaurant was open, so there was a decent amount of noise and the waterfall didn't help. We asked if they could turn it off for a bit and we found out that, lucky for us, it was going to be shut off soon for repairs anyway. This was NOT lucky news for the goldfish that lived in the little pool of water. We were in the middle of a scene when the owner, Charlie Lin, called us over to help save the fish who were flopping around in the empty reservoir.

We took a break to eat and it was time for me to face the grim reality of our G5 power cable situation. Sam had retrieved a cable we thought would work from Devil's Due but... it didn't. We had already called the Apple Store and been told that it was a special order part but I decided, since we were closeby, to investigate in person... and beg. Kelly drove me over and I made my way through the suprisingly busy store to the Genius Bar, where I skipped ahead of the people who made appointments and pleaded for help. I was told, "no", "sorry", and "there's nothing we can do" for about an hour before someone named Mike finally saved us and let me borrow the elusive cable I needed. We raced back to the restaurant, where I gave the cable to Sam to take to the apt and try out. Sam took one look at it and said it was the wrong thing but I insisted he humor me and try it out anyway.

Twenty minutes later he texted me, "I've never been more happy to be wrong!"

Knowing that hurdle had been overcome, I suddenly felt much better about everything. Kelly and I quickly ate some of the food that Bryan kindly didn't finish.

We breezed through the rest of our scenes and finished shooting at around 3:30pm!

Josh, Liz and I went back to her apartment and immediately began capturing and reviewing footage.

Josh and I had a rough edit by 1am. Liz Rob and Kelly watched us work...

...and the darn cat wouldn't stop playing video games.

I worked on some music while Josh took some photos of OneTwoThree.

We were the first team to turn in our finished film at 7pm on Sunday - we didn't want to repeat the experience from the previous weekend.

After turning in the completed film, we packed up the equipment and sent Josh on his way back to Cincinnati. He had to get home for work the next day. Since I am as free as the mythical Northern winds I decided to stay for the screening on Tuesday.

Tuesday came. Everyone found the place by writing the address on their hands. Cute.

Bryan was nervous.

Rob and Liz were wondering how Sean Dove's email got written on their armrest.

Kelly was freaked out by the voting process.

We won the "Audience Choice Award" so we went to a bar to celebrate!!!

So that's Chicago. All Two of Us will be screened at the Best of Chicago's 48 Hour Film Project on July 10th. Our friend, Sean Dove's film turned out pretty good as well. You can watch it on YouTube. And listen to the freakin' Crankcast (a podcast about... comics and stuff)! - posted by Kendall

The last few weeks have been nonstop busy and productive. Within the span of twelve days we completed two short films for the 48 Hour Film Project and had three screenings - two in Cincinnati and one in Chicago. Our Cincinnati film, Mustache of Lies, recieved a great response at both screenings and our Chicago film,
All Two of Us, won the "Audience Choice Award"!

Okay, Let me think waaay back to June 9th and see if I can remember how things went down... Josh and I went to the kickoff event at Media Bridges with the hope of not getting "action/adventure" again (although we decided that Exploded 2 would be fun to make) or "drama" (we talked at length about what constitutes a dramedy but I think we just confused ourselves). 7pm came around and I drew the genre this time, coming out with "detective/cop". I wasn't so hot on it but we kept it anyway. Josh and I walked back to my place and started coming up with an outline.

By the time the cast and crew arrived at 10pm we were pretty set. I had never seen so many people in my apartment before. Josh and I met the bulk of the crew that our cinematographer, Woo, put together for the first time.

After going over everybodies roles and where this was going to all happen, everyone left, allowing Josh and I to write the actual script.

We finished around 3am and I immediately began working on music while Josh went to make copies of the script and pick up some supplies. We had decided that we were going to include a musical sequence in the script regardless of what genre we pulled. I knew that Paul could pull it off so I wrote it for his character. I wrote the song on guitar and then sequenced some tracks in Reason. I recorded it with my vocals for Paul to use as reference and sent him mp3s and lyrics to study the next morning.

Daylight crept up on us and before we knew it we had to leave for filming at Trisha's house. Trisha has this amazing home and she let us film some exterior shots there. Turns out it was a little hard to find for most of the crew though (my lack of directions didn't help) so we got a bit of a late start. Once everyone arrived things came together quickly and we finished right on schedule. Josh and I hadn't worked with a crew this large or professional before and they were awesome. Trisha saved us by running some errands and putting together some of the missing pieces. She also provided an amazing hot lunch!

Our second location was at Christy's, the bar I cut my drinking teeth on and also a location we used in the first scene of Love Me, Don't Sit on Me. Once again, the cast and crew pulled through in a big way. Shannon provided some amazing mustaches for us. Paul gave a fantastic musical performance. We finished around 8pm and we left with some great footage.

From there it was back to my place where we immediately captured and reviewed the footage.

I finally passed out at around midnight (after being awake for 41 hours straight) and slept for four hours. After we completed a rough cut, I started working on the music again. Paul came over and we recorded his vocals for the final mix while Josh worked on refining the edit.

We also got our titles from Julie Hill and put them in place. I was working on music until the absolute last minute possible, making Josh quite nervous. As we were exporting our final edit to tape I noticed that there was a shot with out of sync audio. Josh took the tape with the bad edit and all the forms and rushed to the drop off location while I fixed the bad edit and made a second tape. If I couldn't get there in time, Josh would turn in the bad tape. I rolled up to the door and handed Josh the tape at the last minute and he turned it in with 30 seconds to spare. No problem.

The first screening took place the following Wednesday. We were in a group with a lot of other fantastic films - I was impressed!

We didn't get to go to the Friday screening though because Josh and I were on our way to Chicago. Apparently, we missed quite the spectacle but I'll fill everyone in on that after I see the video. Stay tuned for details about our weekend in Chicago - right now I've gotta head out to the desdemona festival! - posted by Kendall

Kendall and I are going to be super busy starting tomorrow doing the 48 Hour Film Project. Hopefully we won't die during the process. So to give you the heads up in case of our deaths (I think Kendall will go first) we just wanted to mention to see whatever our 48 Hour Project film will be at The Carnegie located at 1028 Scott Blvd Covington, KY on Wednesday, June 14 at 6:15pm and Friday, June 16 at 9p.m. If we live, Kendall and I will be at the Wednesday one but not Friday because we'll be in Chicago doing the 48 Hour Film Project again. Please come out and support all the filmmakers but support us just a little more. Like that favorite child your parents have but won't confess too. If you know don't which one it is well it's not you. Pizza Infinity however promises to love you like you're our favorite. Come to our screening and we will give you the love your parents couldn't or choice not to.

p.s. If you're parents actually loved you well pat yourself on the back. Stop rubbing it in everyone's face. Geez.

p.p.s. Don't worry I'm going to pull through. Memorial dates for Kendall pending an actual death. - posted by Josh

Thanks to everyone who came to the screening last night! The film got a good reaction and the Greenwich is a really cool looking place - giant fish tank! Plus, they had free pizza which Josh and I have deluded ourselves into believing was a nod to us. It's happening again tonight so make it if you can...- posted by Kendall

Many of you may know that Josh is in a sketch comedy troupe called Damn Handsome Men. They were even on the cover(!) of CiN Weekly a few weeks back. Also in the group are Richard Alcorn, Aaron Maas, Erin Schaur and Scott Spaulding - names you should recognize from their many contributions to our films. They have a show tonight at Union Station (which used to be Crush which used to be Plush) in downtown Cincinnati. Show starts at 7pm? 825 Main St. - posted by Kendall

Things I learned recently... if you want to make a short film in a short period of time, you can have cows in it or you can have a babies in it but you should never try to have BOTH at the same time.

Tuesday, we filmed a short called Utter Chaos featuring Paul Kreft, Stirling Maas and Steve Groh. It's based on a short story by Terry Cronin, from his anthology comic book, Students of the Unusual. - posted by Kendall

From our press release...

In the recently opened Mission: Impossible III, Tom Cruise runs around with a bomb planted inside his head. Cincinnati filmmakers Kendall Bruns and Josh Flowers already explored this territory nearly a year ago in their award winning comedic short film, Exploded.
Exploded, created as part of last July's 48 Hour Film Project, begins with the main character waking to discover a bomb has been planted inside his head. The same plot point was hinted in some of the Mission: Impossible III trailers but it wasn't until Kendall Bruns watched the film that it really became apparent.

Bruns says, "I cant believe it. Especially considering how we came up with the idea." The 48 Hour Film Project is an international festival and competition where teams have only 48 hours to write, film and edit a 4-7 minute film. Teams randomly draw a genre at the start of the allotted time. "Our genre was Action/Adventure and we tried to think of the most ridiculous idea possible. The fact that what we came up with has now coincidentally been used as a major plot point in what is sure to be one of the years biggest movies is pretty ironic. We spoofed the movie before it even came out... by accident," explains Bruns.

Flowers is equally surprised saying, "I mean come on, a bomb in the head? You wouldn't even see that in a Bond movie. Instead of just shooting the guy you perform surgery and implant a bomb in his head? Their version isnt even a comedy!" - posted by Kendall
